Why Prepping Your Skin Before a Spray Tan is Important

Most people don't understand the real reason they are asked to exfoliate their skin before an airbrush tan. If you thought to yourself, "it's so the skin is clean," you are somewhat correct.

The very top, most superficial layer of skin is the stratum corneum, which is made up of dead skin cells. This layer is constantly shedding off as deeper layers of the skin push up new cells. The stratum corneum, like other areas of the body, also contains amino acids.

When DHA (the main ingredient in all tanning solutions and lotions) is applied to the skin, it causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids. This reaction causes a browning and bronzing color of your skin cells.

This is where the pre-tan exfoliation task comes in.

Some areas of the body don't naturally slough off as quickly as others. In order to diminish any built up areas of dead skin, exfoliating is necessary. This will allow the solution to be applied evenly to the entire area/body. It's also key for the longevity of your spray tan and for avoiding patchy areas of leftover solution.

As a side note, it's best to shave at least 12 hours before your spray tan. Shaving too soon before your appointment can cause solution to darken your pores.
